The December 2022 newsletter from Sandia Heights Homeowners Association announces the upcoming annual meeting in February, highlighting the addition of new candidates for the SHHA Board of Directors with biographies provided in the issue. The newsletter also addresses the need for financial adjustments, leading to an increase in member dues to $15 per month starting in January, as well as a raise in tram passes to $10. Additionally, there is a call for new directors to join the Board to fill upcoming vacancies, emphasizing the importance of community support in sustaining Sandia Heights. The Environment & Safety Committee Chair advises homeowners on responsibilities regarding the set-back areas along roads, outlining tasks like keeping the area clear of shrubs and landscaping, and notes Bernalillo County's responsibilities in mowing certain areas to aid with drainage while addressing challenges faced in maintaining these spaces.
The newsletter provides updates on the Elena Gallegos development in the open space area, highlighting opposition from concerned citizens and legal actions taken against the City of Albuquerque's proposed plans. Save the Elena Gallegos organization is actively collecting signatures for a petition against the development, alongside fundraising efforts for legal fees. The newsletter also includes information on GHOW and red-tailed hawks, encouraging community involvement in creating appropriate nests for the raptors.
An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is being considered as a potentially profitable venture, contingent upon the development of public interest. The initiative aims to study existing landscape pests in the Albuquerque area, monitor urban landscapes weekly, and educate the public on reducing chemical applications and promoting environmentally friendly practices. The project may eventually transition to be known as Plant Health Care, focusing on preventative measures through proper horticultural techniques.
Additionally, Sandia Heights residents are invited to participate in the "Cork & Fork" dining activity, where bimonthly dinners are hosted in members' homes, emphasizing a casual and enjoyable dining experience. Interested individuals can inquire about joining these dinner groups throughout the year by contacting Rene Kessel. The Sandia Heights Homeowners Association office will be closed for the holidays from December 26, 2022, through January 2, 2023, reopening on January 3, 2023, at 9 AM. As the newsletter concludes, warm wishes are extended for a happy and safe holiday season to all residents.
